Much of Dana Shores was built in the 1960s and early 1970s. As aspects of our infrastructure deteriorate, break, or reach obsolescence, it is incumbent upon our community to reach out to and work with appropriate government resources.
Future Considerations — Vision
- Seek opportunities with Hillsborough County to improve storm drainage along Dana Shores Drive. In 2017, regraded ditches at Americana and Versailles to promote proper drainage along Dana Shores Drive. Worked with Hillsborough County Public Storm Water Management to identify infrastructure changes that will reduce summer flooding near Pelican Island and at Fontainebleau Drive. The county has assigned these projects high priority for future funding. (UNDERWAY)
- Work with Hillsborough County to have existing sidewalks repaired or replaced.
- Work with Hillsborough County to add a right turn lane at the intersection of Memorial Hwy and Dana Shores Dr.
Completed Items — Select Community Highlights
- Participated in 2015 transportation planning efforts and encouraged repaving efforts along Memorial Highway. In January 2016, the County repaved the highway between Hillsborough Avenue and Independence Parkway, providing much needed relief from large, recurring potholes.
- Worked with FDOT to repair lane guards and enhance safety on the Veterans Expressway near the Independence Parkway on-ramp.
- Worked with city resources to address drainage issues at George Road and Independence Parkway, reducing the risk of vehicles hydroplaning at this intersection.
- Encouraged and helped direct replacement of dated and broken infrastructure in and around Skyway Park. Partnered with leadership at Skyway Park and Hillsborough County to remove outdated signage; replace the damaged sign at the park’s main entrance along George Road; add locking bollards along the bike path; paint and lock the gate at the southern entrance; remove two large piles of fill dirt that sat near the bike path; regrade the drainage ditches along the bike path; replenish mulch in the children’s park; replace damaged chain link fence along the west side of the children’s park, around the tennis courts, and along Independence Parkway; resurface the tennis courts and add new lighting; remove multiple dead trees; add a trash receptacle at the south end of the bike path, and more. The improved appearance and reduced ingress/egress options have greatly reduced nighttime issues.
- Worked with Hillsborough County to have neighborhood roads milled and resurfaced.
